April 2010 Newsletter published

The latest 23-page bumper edition of the ENIRDELM Newsletter was published on 14 April. It includes details and links to the Szeged Conference Web-site specifying the deadline of 30 June for the call for papers and the lower rate for the conference fee.   Tibor Barath this year's Chairperson of ENIRDELM announces the creation of an interim Permanent Secretariat to look after non-conference business of the network.  In the "ENIRDELM Matters" section a strategic proposal for the way forward for ENIRDELM is included in readiness for the network's 20th anninversary in 2011.  The membership will be consulted in Szeged about the strategy and about the form and location of the Permanent Secretariat.  Among the usual range of features there are short biopics and photos of a number of senior members of the network and an article about the rise and influence of international league tables in higher education.  Missing in this edition is Dean Bowles' popular regular report from the USA, but this will be resumed in the next post-conference edition in November.

History of ENIRDELM being updated

As the 20th anniversary of our network in 2011 approaches, we are starting to compile a more detailed record of what we have achieved. ENIRDELM friends are invited to use this blog to send in any recollections they may have of conferences and networking activities during the last 19 years. Currently David Oldroyd is updating the list of conferences, themes and keynote speakers in order to place on the ENIRDELM web-site a fuller record than the one we have at present. The archive of newsletters on the web-site extends back only to April 2001, so any colleagues who have supplementary evidence of ENIRDELM (formerly ENIRDEM) and related activities might be able to fill out the achievements of our friendly network that we plan to celebrate next year. If you have any recollections, please send them to David or write them directly on this blog.

The ENIRDELM Board meeting goes virtual

As ENIRDELM's 20th anniversary approaches in 2011 in a world that has changed greatly since the creation of the network in 1991, following the demise of the USSR, the Board is leading by example by exploiting the possibilities of cyberspace.  Taking advantage of the totally free service of Skype is a first step towards increasing the connectivity between ENIRDELM members.  If the idea of establishing a permanent secretariat for ENIRDELM is implemented, then the use of the internet will take on greater significance.

ENIRDELM Board to mount review of the network

On Jan 16 2010 the ENIRDELM Board chaired by Tibor Barath will meet in Szeged, Hungary to plan the Sept 2010 Conference.  For part of the meeting they will be joined on Skype from Iceland and Poland by Helga Larussdottir and David Oldroyd respectively to discuss the formulation of a new strategy for the 20th Anniversary of ENIRDELM and beyond.  David and Helga have prepared a paper to stimulate the Board's strategic discussion. It includes the proposal to set up a permanent secretariat for managing the connectivity of ENIRDELM members between the annual Conference events.

Request for national updates on Educational Leadership for Sustainability

To prepare for a workshop at the Bergen Conference in September I am seeking information about how various national educational systems, leaders and curricula are addressing issues relating to educating school and university students about a sustainable future for the next generation.

What relevant knowledge, attitudes and skills are being promoted?
How, by whom and where?

If you have any suggestions about sources or can yourself provide insights, please let me know as soon as you can by respondng here on the blog or to - d.oldroyd@wp.pl
